About

I’m a mechanical engineer who designs drug delivery devices — wearable insulin injectors, pen injectors, autoinjectors and passive needle safety devices. Most of my work is the mechanism: the small stack of moulded parts and springs that has to deliver an exact dose, retract a needle and lock itself, reliably, at a price a developing market can absorb.

Enthusiastic about design, medical devices, cars, martial arts and chess.

Experience

Jan 2021 –

Founder and R&D Head

Beyond2D LLP, India
  • Three verticals: dental 3D printing (orthodontic and prosthodontic); glass-filled 3D printed moulds for low-volume injection moulding; and replicating injection-moulded parts for prototyping using different resins and curing techniques.
  • Dental 3D printing: developed ISO 10993 compliant dental resins alongside local resin manufacturers, and printed crowns, dentures, aligners and surgical guides for high-end dental clinics in western India.
  • 3D printed moulds: developed a highly glass-filled resin that prints moulds able to withstand the thermal and structural loads of injection moulding up to 100 complex polycarbonate parts, used as inserts in steel frames.
  • Prototyping resins: developed 3D printable resins replicating the tensile and bending properties of common injection moulding plastics, and ran tensile, compression, fatigue, bending and hardness tests to give clients comparison data sheets.

R&D Engineer

Mediscient Devices Pvt. Ltd., Vadodara, India
  • Needle safety device for Lanreotide: developed a pre-filled-syringe-based passive needle safety device housing Lanreotide depot, a highly viscous drug for acromegaly and other growth-hormone disorders. Ran the usability engineering study with patients, risk management as per ISO 14971, test protocols based on ISO 11608, and all documentation for registering the device (DHF, DMR and so on).
  • InsuPress smart wearable insulin injector: a mechanical insulin pump that can be worn on the body or carried in a pocket. Co-developed both the disposable and reusable versions, ran risk management as per ISO 14971 (DFMEA, residual risk benefit), the usability engineering study, all DHF, DMR and clinical trial documentation, and designed test protocols based on ISO 11608.
  • Fixed and multi-dose platform injector: 50% smaller in volume than its competitors and far more ergonomic, with a dose counter in fewer parts than the Forteo predicate pen, and an injection-mouldable assembly. Co-developed it and drafted the technical brief and claims tree for patent submission.
  • Reusable variable-dose injection pen: developed a new mechanism that does not hamper any existing pen injector patents.
  • Subcutaneous port: a needle-less injection experience for people uncomfortable with needles.
  • Wearable smart sanitiser dispenser: a wristband that detects handshakes or door-opening using an IMU and vibrates to remind the wearer to sanitise their hands, and can dispense sanitiser too.

Product Design Intern

Credence Management Corp., Vadodara, India
  • Explored the commercialisation of a compliant surgical gripper to replace conventional tools like towel clamps, sponge forceps and tube clamps, under the guidance of R&D engineers specialising in medical device design and manufacturing.
Apr 2020 – Sep 2020

R&D Intern (remote, part time)

Cargar
  • Design and thermal analysis of a portable IP-65 rated battery pack built from 18650 cells for charging electric vehicles.
  • Design and analysis of an electric vehicle carrying a 100 kWh prismatic battery pack.
